Archive for the ‘plot’ Category

I started to plot my Nanowrimo novel a few days ago, ok, well rather I bought a new notebook from Paperchase and decided it needed a high purpose. The idea I had for an epic romance/historical drama still flutter about in my head, so I think it would be an excellent time to get it kick started. Particularly as i will need to do alot of plotting for this story.

Normally when I write I just start witht the first line and go from there, I enjoy seeing where it takes me and what happens next, it helps the characters to live for themselves and once they do the telling gets so much easier. This time I am plotting, simply because the timing is so important and the period of history is inflexible. Historical events are a great framework of facts and figures of what is known about the time period, but how you dress it will be the key part to keeping people interested.

I remember when i was growing up, the books by Cynthia Harnett were totally delightful to read and not in the least boring way of learning a little bit about history. My favourite (of which I found a 1st editon for £3 in a charity shop years ago) was ‘The Load of Unicorn’ which was to do with scribes and the advent of printing as a boy from a scribe’s family was sent as an apprentice to Caxton. There was intrigue as well and you really learned a lot about that small section of time. ‘The Wool Pack’ was another favourite and I hope I can make my historical novel just as interesting and educational.

Sso far i have a vague outline of each chhacter’s story and the time line for each, its like having the fabric but not the framework. Now i need to start on the hard facts and then follow that with initial research. I have had books for this for some time too, so it will be great to finally dive into them and also will teach me alot too about that particular decade of history over which the story takes place.

lost it…

yup… lost the plot on this one. I really, and i mean that from the bottom of my heart and toes, want to finish the gangster fic but have been struggling with the current chapter a few weeks now. I don’t think i have lost touch so much as lost confidence with what i am doing. I should continue to be writing it for me, but i am beginning to think i am worrying too much about what readers want to hear and think. Over the next few days i will triple my efforts to get this chapter done and immerse myself in the characters totally. I will reread the original plot and get back into the groove, i have to, i really must as this and the prequel which comes next will be the last fan fic i will be writing. (more on that another time)

Chapter 3

This was not as easy as the others, perhaps because i don’t know the girls so well.

‘man with no name’ is asleep and she’s just thinking, so no dialogue to pad it all out. Its nice to get to know her a bit, but she’s not telling me why they are there doing what they are doing and he can’t because he is asleep -_- I initailly thought they were in a differnt time frame to the boys in chapter 2, but maybe they are in the same time frame and they are all on a collision course, or maybe.. gah.. i could go in circles ont hsi one hehe.

I think in the end they are different people to chapter 3, They have a different feel to them and, judging by what she thinks, they have a different history too. still, there is room to manoever and i am only half way through the chapter. will do a word count in about an hour before i sleep, but i think i almost made my 5000 for today. it makes a good start as tomorrow and monday will really lack time for me to write.

Chapter 2

3709 – I am sure that’s the most I’ve written on the 1st day!! I have to do as much as possible when i can because of starting work next week, so I am very happy with how this is progressing.

I have three characters in this second chapter, I’ve not met them before, though maybe one is from the 1st chapter I am not sure yet, same for the girl in the 1st chapter. I like mysteries like that, I do hope it gets reveals some time soon. I have a feeling it could be the main character i use in chapter 2, but then i think he is taller than the guy in chapter 1, all of the chapter 2 guys are, so maybe i have more digging and exploring to do.

as you can probably tell i am a bit of a ‘seat-of-your-pants’ kind of writer. I start at the beginning and see where it takes me. I figure that I enjoy the journey of writing it then people should enjoy the journey of reading it – if i let them of course ha ha!!
